Denver Post, The (CO) November 21, 2004 CU pledge's family starts foundation Author: Mike McPhee Denver Post Staff Writer Edition: SUN Section: DENVER AND WEST Page: C-03 Index Terms: foundations alcohol education students colleges Article Text: Lynn "Gordie" Bailey's family has formed a foundation in honor of the 18- year-old CU freshman who died of alcohol poisoning after a fraternity hazing incident in September. The Gordie Foundation (www.thegordiefoundation.org) is dedicated to educating college students and their parents about the dangers of alcohol poisoning and to confront the lethal tradition of providing large amounts of alcohol to underage pledges. Bailey was pledging Chi Psi fraternity in Boulder when he and two dozen others were taken to Gold Hill, at 9,000 feet, to drink bottles of whiskey and sweet wine. Bailey, a lacrosse player, was found dead in the fraternity house the next morning with a blood-alcohol content of 0.328 percent, four times the legal limit for driving. The family said it is appalled at the lack of cooperation or even concern from the University of Colorado and the national Chi Psi system. "They can't do anything collectively to make us madder, which is no communication, no acknowledgment that this was a tragedy caused by hazing, by underaged kids using large amounts of alcohol." said Michael Lanahan, Bailey's stepfather. Lanahan said his family can't live with anger and revenge, so it formed a foundation dedicated to education about hazing and alcohol poisoning. Copyright 2004 The Denver Post Corp.
